Are Sex Crimes Considered a Misdemeanor or Felony in Tennessee?
Depending on the facts of the case, a sex offense may be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony. For example, a Class A misdemeanor is punishable by no more than 6 months in jail and a maximum fine of $500, or both. On the other hand, a Class D felony is punishable by 2 to 12 years in prison and a fine up to $3,000. The penalties for a Class C felony include 3 to 15 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. A Class B felony is punishable by 8 to 30 years in prison and up to a $50,000 fine.
Will I Have to Register as a Sex Offender?
If you are convicted of a sex offense, you may be required to register as a sex offender. Violent offenders are required to register for life, whereas "sexual offenders" may request the termination of their registration requirements after 10 years.
The failure to register or update records could result in a charge of a Class E felony. Additionally, if an offender is on probation or parole, failure to comply with registration requirements could result in the revocation of probation or parole.
